How the College Approaches Accessibility
Shared Responsibility
Every person who creates or publishes digital content plays a role. This is not the work of one office.
Support, Not Policing
ITS provides tools, training, and one-on-one guidance to help you comply.
Continuous Improvement
Full compliance is an ongoing journey. We aim high and keep building.
What Falls Within Scope
CMC’s standard is WCAG 2.1 AA — a widely adopted technical specification that addresses barriers related to vision, hearing, mobility, and cognition. Scope is broad and applies across all CMC-administered digital environments, and to third parties who create digital content on the College’s behalf.
Websites & Web Properties
cmc.edu, all subdomains, and any web application used to deliver CMC programs, services, and activities.
Course Materials
PDFs, presentations, videos, Canvas pages, and any instructional content posted to Canvas LMS or shared with students.
Documents & Communications
PDFs, Word documents, mass emails, and the Informs digest — any broadly distributed institutional communication.
Software & Platforms
Any application or platform used to deliver CMC programs, services, and activities, including third-party tools procured by departments.
Quick Start — Where Do I Begin?
Think About Your Workflows

Help Desk →Your Role
If you create PDFs, send mass emails, use Canva or Google Forms, or manage a departmental web page — you have a role. Start with the guide for your most common content type. ITS is here to support you, not audit you. Reach out whenever you are unsure about a specific file or workflow.
Course materials in Canvas — PDFs, presentations, videos, and course pages — are within scope. ITS and the Center for Teaching and Learning are here to help. Use the Canvas Accessibility Checker to review your Pages and Assignments before the semester begins, and reach out for a one-on-one review if you are unsure.
Website editors are responsible for WCAG 2.1 AA compliance on their properties. Siteimprove provides ongoing scanning — request your site's report from ITS. Mass email templates should be tested for screen reader compatibility, and images in the Informs digest must include alt text.
The Digital Accessibility Policy counts students and student groups as content creators. If you post to Canvas, share slides or documents with a class, run a club or organisation account, or build a page for a campus event, the same standards apply to what you publish — and the same guides will help.
If you need personal disability accommodations rather than help making content accessible, contact Accessibility Services in CMC’s Office of Civil Rights.
Any new software or platform must be evaluated for accessibility before purchase, and no third-party contract can be signed until ITS has reviewed and approved it. You do not need to do this evaluation yourself — tell ITS Solutions what you want to buy before you sign anything, and the team handles the ACR review and vendor negotiation on your behalf.
