Why It Matters

The Robert Day Science Center is a paradigm shift in campus IT infrastructure — a building designed from the ground up with technology as a first-class citizen, not an afterthought. Every lab bench, corridor, and collaboration space was built with converged digital infrastructure in mind, and the building is now fully open and operational.

Encelium intelligent lighting, 360-degree IP security cameras (Genetec), hybrid Mac/PC research labs, and high-speed 10 Gigabit fiber optics for scientific instruments combine to create a world-class research environment at CMC.

State-of-the-art facilities attract top faculty and students, and the RDSC's modular design ensures technology can evolve alongside research needs for decades to come.

Network Infrastructure

The RDSC features a fiber-to-the-edge architecture with connectivity extending to every lab bench and workstation:

  • Multi-mode fiber upgraded to support 10 Gigabit bandwidth throughout the building
  • Dedicated Research and Development Science Center DMZ for sensitive research data
  • Redundant uplinks via dual paths to the core switching fabric — no single point of failure
  • Wi-Fi 6/6E access points in all common areas and labs with dedicated research VLANs
  • Secure guest wireless in public areas with separate authentication

Smart Building Systems

  • Encelium intelligent lighting — sensors and scheduling reduce energy while maintaining optimal research environments
  • Genetec Ocularis 360-degree IP cameras — covering all entrances, corridors, labs, and exterior spaces
  • Allegion door locks and Genea integration — electronic access control with RFID cards and mobile credentials
  • Video analytics with advanced detection capabilities for security monitoring
  • Emergency lighting protocols with automated response during power events and alarms

Research Lab Infrastructure

  • Dual-platform computing — labs configured for both macOS and Windows workstations
  • Unified identity management via Active Directory and Entra ID across all systems
  • Microsoft Intune for centralized endpoint configuration and compliance management
  • Network-ready scientific instruments with high-bandwidth, low-latency data pipelines
  • Storage integration — RDSC instruments connected to Pure Storage and cloud resources
