Google Gemini

Available to CMC at gemini.google.com with your CMC Google account.

Overview

Google Gemini is accessed at gemini.google.com, signed in with your CMC Google account — @students.claremontmckenna.edu for students, @g.cmc.edu for faculty and staff. It provides advanced generative text, data analysis, and document understanding with strict enterprise data protections.

Who has access

Students automatically have a CMC Google account and can use Gemini right away. Faculty and staff need to request that their @g.cmc.edu account be enabled — contact the Help Desk at help@cmc.edu. There is no charge to students, faculty, or staff.

Logging in through your personal Google account bypasses CMC's enterprise protections. Always sign in with your CMC Google account.

Getting Started

1

Go to gemini.google.com

Navigate to gemini.google.com and sign in the normal Google way with your CMC Google account. Students: use username@students.claremontmckenna.edu. Faculty and staff: use your jdoe@g.cmc.edu account once the Help Desk has enabled it (see Google Workspace for first-time sign-in). Do not use your personal Google account — the enterprise protections only apply to CMC accounts.

2

Confirm You Are in Your CMC Account

Click your profile picture in the upper-right corner and make sure it shows your CMC Google account, not a personal Gmail. You can also open Gemini from the app grid in Gmail, Drive, or Docs while signed in to your CMC account.

3

Start a Conversation or Use Sidebar

Accept the terms the first time you open Gemini, then type a prompt directly. Switch models (such as Fast, Thinking, or Pro) from the drop-down in the prompt box. You can also open a Google Doc or Sheet and use the Gemini sidebar for in-context assistance with your specific document.

4

Review and Iterate

Always review AI-generated content before using it. Ask follow-up questions to refine outputs. Be specific in your prompts for best results.

Enterprise Data Protections

  • No Data Training

Your conversations and uploaded documents are never used to train Google's public AI models. This is enforced by CMC's enterprise agreement with Google.

  • Account Isolation

Your CMC Google account is entirely separate from personal Google accounts. Data entered in CMC's Gemini stays within CMC's institutional environment.

  • FERPA Compliance

All AI-generated content and queries involving student data are handled in compliance with FERPA through Google's Education agreement.
