Step-by-Step Guide

Connect to EduRoam Wi-Fi

CMC's secure, unthrottled campus network — available worldwide at 10,000+ participating institutions.

Before You Begin

  • Your CMC username plus the CMC context — username@cmc.edu (for example jdoe26@cmc.edu). This is not your email address — see below
  • Your CMC password
  • A device running macOS 12+, Windows 10+, iOS 15+, Android 10+, or Linux
  • Wi-Fi enabled on your device
  • For gaming consoles or smart TVs, see the Dorm Devices guide instead

Username, email, and context are three different things

Most eduroam sign-in failures are not password problems — they are people typing an email address where a username and context belong. Here is the difference, using a student named Jane Doe:

Username
What you log in with. It is only the part before the @ sign — jdoe26. Nothing after it is part of your username.
Email
Where your mail is delivered. For students that is jdoe26@students.claremontmckenna.edu; for faculty and staff it is jdoe@cmc.edu. An email address is a mailbox, not a login.
Context
What eduroam needs. eduroam is a worldwide network, so it has to be told which campus to ask about you. You supply that by adding your campus context to your username: username@campus.edu. At CMC the context is always @cmc.edu — so Jane types jdoe26@cmc.edu, even though that is not her email address. A Harvey Mudd student types @hmc.edu, a Pomona student @pomona.edu, and so on.

Students, in one line: your username is jdoe26, your email is jdoe26@students.claremontmckenna.edu, and your eduroam context is jdoe26@cmc.edu. Typing your student email address into eduroam will fail every time.

1

Open Your Device's Wi-Fi Settings

Navigate to your device's Wi-Fi or network settings. The location varies by platform — on macOS, go to System Settings → Wi-Fi. On Windows, click the network icon in the taskbar. On iOS, go to Settings → Wi-Fi.

2

Select the "eduroam" Network

From the list of available wireless networks, find and tap or click eduroam. It will appear in the network list when you're on the CMC campus or at any of 10,000+ participating institutions worldwide.

Note: EduRoam uses WPA2-Enterprise authentication — it's more secure than a standard password-protected network. Your credentials are verified securely through CMC's directory services.

3

Enter Your CMC Credentials

When prompted for a username and password, enter your username followed by the CMC context — username@cmc.edu, for example jdoe26@cmc.edu — and your CMC password.

This is not your email address. The @cmc.edu on the end is the context that tells the eduroam servers to check your credentials with CMC. Students still type @cmc.edu here, never @students.claremontmckenna.edu. See Username, email, and context above.

Configuration details vary slightly by platform:

macOS: Select WPA2 Enterprise as the security type. Enter username@cmc.edu as the username and your CMC password. Accept the EduRoam CA certificate when prompted.

Windows: The system should auto-configure correctly. If prompted, select Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP) and enter username@cmc.edu and your CMC password.

iPhone/iPad: Enter username@cmc.edu and your CMC password. Under "Certificate," if prompted about server identity, select Trust for the CMC radius certificate.

Android: For PEAP authentication, set Inner authentication to GTC or MSCHAPv2. Enter username@cmc.edu as the identity and your CMC password.

Linux (NetworkManager): Set Security to WPA & WPA2 Enterprise. Authentication: PEAP. Inner auth: MSCHAPv2. CA cert: Do not verify. Enter username@cmc.edu and your CMC password.

4

Trust the Network Certificate

You may see a certificate warning from radius.cmc.edu. Click Trust or Continue to accept the CMC network certificate. This is normal and expected — it verifies you're connecting to CMC's authentic network infrastructure.

5

Confirm Your Connection

Your device should now show a connected status to eduroam. Open a browser and verify you can reach an external website such as google.com. Once connected, your device will automatically reconnect to eduroam at any participating institution worldwide — no re-entering credentials needed.

Global access: EduRoam works at over 10,000 universities, research institutions, and libraries in 100+ countries. Simply connect to "eduroam" when visiting partner institutions — your CMC credentials work everywhere.

Troubleshooting

Verify your Caps Lock is off. Make sure you are entering your username plus the CMC context — jdoe26@cmc.edu — not your username alone and not your student email address (@students.claremontmckenna.edu will not authenticate against eduroam). If you've recently changed your password, forget the network and reconnect with the new password. Reset your password at mypassword.claremontmckenna.edu.
You may be outside campus coverage or visiting a location that doesn't participate. Ensure Wi-Fi is enabled on your device and you're within range of a wireless access point. EduRoam is available throughout all CMC buildings, residence halls, and outdoor spaces.
Ensure your device supports WPA2-Enterprise. Gaming consoles, smart TVs, and older IoT devices typically do not. For those devices, see our Dorm Devices guide for MAC Address Bypass registration.
EduRoam is unthrottled. If you experience slow speeds, try forgetting the network and reconnecting. Moving closer to a wireless access point can also improve performance. If speeds remain slow, contact the Help Desk.
